Day 59 A Little Slice of Academic Orange

ORANGES ON BLACK

BREAKFAST BOWL

Here are a couple of "orange slice" paintings . . . I mentioned the other day about mixing orange . . . don't like how I did it here . . . but have found while the lemon yellow w/cad red doesn't work well cad red and cad yellow are really rich . . . however for an overall yellow . . . if I minimize my palette to just one yellow I am going back to hansa yellow . . . even though I found it difficult to use in landscape painting last year . . .I think I have a better handle on how to create greens with in now . . . and really think it's going to work out as the best all around yellow . . . we'll see . . . as coming up soon are some orange slices I did w/ the hansa yellow mixtures . . . until then . . . Enjoy!

Day 58

APPLE BESIDE HER VINEGAR - The B and H are silent!

Obviously I have been playing too much Scrabble and other word games . . . love this little painting though . . . it is the first one I did during open studio yesterday . . . and I really think the "freshness" shows . . . did one more painting last night so that makes 8 in one day . . . have some important paperwork to finish this weekend so will try to stay a way from the easel a bit . . . or not . . . until then Enjoy!

Day 57 I'm A Little Teapot

I'M A LITTLE TEAPOT

Did 7 paintings during open studio today . . . set up several simple still lives . . . here's one . . . didn't use it here but figured out the best all around orange mixture (with limited primary palette) . . . so one gold star for doing some "technical color mixing" . . . more on that later . . . like when I actually use the "right' orange . . . more paintings on the way . . . until then Enjoy!

Day 56 Funky Figures

DOG WALKER

I really don't know where I am headed with these funky figures . . . just trying to capture a gesture in the most painterly way possible I suppose . . . done from imagination . . . so I am anxious to try some in this style from a live model! . . . until then Enjoy!

Day 55 It Figures

SELF PORTRAIT

MODELING ON THE TRAIL
Messed around with a small self portrait for over an hour this morning . . . always try to put too much detail in the face . . . wiped it off and ended up with this little figure . . . yep that's me! . . . the second one is a lady out on the trail this morning . . . you could tell she had on a "brand new" sweatshirt . . . pretty color . . . but stood out like a sore thumb amidst all the drab late winter greys and browns . . . Enjoy!

Day 54 Figuring It Out

QUICK COUPLE

Another quick oil sketch of the "couple" walking on the trail . . . they go by every morning at about the exact same time . . . my painting pal Mary has organized a "figure" drawing/painting group every other Saturday . . . haven't gone yet . . . but I'm starting to feel a desire to do some "figure" work . . . so you might see more of these types of paintings soon . . . I got some (never all) of my "paperwork" obligations done last week . . . so hope to do some extra paintings this week . . . also stay tuned for a very special invitation to paint with me (and a bunch of really good painters) this summer . . . until then . . . .Enjoy!

Day 53 Perfect Pear

PERFECT PEAR

Love the reflection of this pear on the black table . . . this is on the 5"x5" panel I've switched to . . . off on a tangent here but if you notice on my blog site there is a slide show of all the daily paintings to date . . . this is imported from another application . . . so I only update the photos about once a month . . . so at the end of February I will load all this month's photos to the slide show. . . it's a great way to see everything . . . without scrolling through all the posts!

Day 52 Changes

LAST BEST LITTLE LANDSCAPE

Late Winter is trying awful hard to change in to Early Spring . . . and I am making some specific changes to my daily painting procedures (more on that later) . . . Here's a quick little landscape . . . real happy with this one . . . it is also the last of the 6" x 6" daily paintings . . . as I am going back to the 5"x5" size for several reasons . . . the most efficient being at just a hair under 5 inches square each painting fits into pre-designed and made CD/DVD holders and cases . . . after all I've only been a daily painter "officially" for 52 days . . . and I have done nearly, if not over 100 paintings so far . . . I am looking into not necessary "storage"options so much as display options . . . love the CD racks that hold 48 "pieces" like slices of bread in a loaf and you can "flip through them . . . any way that's where I am headed . . . . so look for the new size tomorrow . . .until then. . . . Enjoy!

Day 51 Another Sneak Preview

WINTER WORK
Here is one of the 3 pieces I will be taking in on Monday to exhibit at the Sandpiper Gallery . . . it is 8 x10 inches oil on panel . . . hard to get a good photo as it is already framed . . . this piece will be priced at $350 in the gallery . . . but can be purchased online by contacting me via e-mail ASAP. Hectic day here . . will be doing my "regular" daily painting when I am done posting so you might not see it until tomorrow . . . until then . . . Enjoy!

Day 50 This, That & The Other

MID WINTER TREE TOPS

TWO OF A KIND

FUN HOUSE MIRROR

LAST OF THE PEPPERS

Just a little of everything to day . . . tried the winter sky again and it ended up being a painting about the tree tops. . . Connie & I worked on reflections of pears during open studio today . . . a challenge to do an even number of objects . . . but think I pulled it off by incorporating the bright reflections . . . had to do Gail's peppers one more time . . . as the are getting"wrinkles". . . they looked so good on the purple linen . . . great "art talk" with Connie but nothing earth-shaking about today's work . . . just "Paint, Paint, Paint" . . . I am ready for a new self imposed "assignment" . . . so stay tuned!

Day 49 Winter Blues

WINTER BLUES
Just a quick little landscape today . . . inspired by the warm and cool blues peeking through the clouds and fog earlier today. . . kind of lost my way on this one . . . putting things in and taking them out . . . instead of focusing on what caught my eye in the first place. . . ends up being a "nice" little landscape . . . instead of a powerful statement about the changing hues above the horizon . . . may take another shot at this tomorrow . . . until then. . . Enjoy!

Day 48 Mild Winter

WINTER WALK

WAITING FOR SPRING

We have had such a mild winter here, especially compared to last year. Last year at this time the tire swing was completely buried in the snow. . . in the other painting my eye caught a couple walking down the trail this morning . . . I really focused on them "thinking" the whole time about how I would have to paint them because within 30 to 40 seconds they rounded the corner . . . I like this one. . .it captures the movement and the damp, cold, foggy morning light. . . to my wonderful painting pal Mary . . "it's NOT about the guy in the green jacket" . . . she'll understand . . . Enjoy!

Day 46 Don't Forget

DON'T FORGET

GRACEN'S CHAIR

Having a big dinner party at my Dad's house tonight . . . didn't want to forget the extra wine glasses I need to take . . . and wanted to get my blog done early . . . so here is a painting of the one of the wine glasses sitting on the counter . . . my grand daughter is here today too . . . the other painting is of her "new' chair . . . I just re-finished it for her second birthday . . . to sum it up . . . you can't (and shouldn't) worry and stress about what to paint everyday . . . it is the process that improves your painting . . . not the product . . . to my art friends . . . Just Paint, then Paint & then Paint some more!

Day 45 Always A Little Extra

LITTLE MAGPIE (today's daily painting)
WINTER WHITE

SPRING ALWAYS COMES

Here's a "regular" daily painting and a couple larger pieces I did for upcoming exhibitions . . . I will be posting the "official" magpie painting soon . . . just wanted to note that this magpie and the antler painting were done after the "official" one . . . unlike many artist I tend to do a painting without any smaller studies first . . . and if it turns out well I will made several "studies" from the larger painting or at least parts of it . . .okay that's confusing . . . but I promise it will make sense when I post the "official" magpie painting . . . I took it to the critique yesterday so didn't get the photos done . . . until then . . . Enjoy!

Today's painting LITTLE MAGPIE is available - $48 . . . it is 6"x6"oil on panel

Day 45 Auction Preview

I PAINTED THE BARN TODAY
MISTY MORNING

Yikes . . . feeling a little tight on time . . . too dark to photograph today's paintings (unless I set up the lights) . . . and it's late enough that I don't want to miss posting by midnight . . . so here is a sneak preview of a piece I am donating to an auction in March (more on that next week) and here is one of the 4 pieces I took to Rusti Warner's critique today . . .I'll post the others too as soon as I get them photographed . . (thanks Rusti and all the participants) . . . it was really fun to see all the paintings and especially good to see all of you that have such a passion for what you are doing . . .
Obviously the auction piece "I PAINTED THE BARN TODAY"will be for sale at the auction (contact me via e-mail if you are interested in bidding on it or have questions) . . . MISTY MORNING is for sale now it is 10"x 8" oil on panel framed with a black 2 1/2" plein aire frame for $300 plus $10 shipping if you are not local. Day 43 Peppers, Peppers, Peppers

RED PEPPER
JUGGLING PEPPERS

NOTHING RHYMES WITH ORANGE
SWEET PEPPERS

Thank you Gail for bring these beautiful peppers to our open studio session! . . . artist challenge . . . you try mixing the right shade of orange for an orange pepper . . . ugh! Never did nail the color . . . so the title refers to comparing the artist trying to mix the right color to the writer who searches for a word to rhyme with "orange" . . . is it possible? . . . I am working on a couple of pieces for some upcoming shows so will try to post those over the weekend. Enjoy!

Day 42 An Apple A Day

AN APPLE A DAY

Here's another Fuji . . . should have gone back in and tapped a darker color just below the apple on the left side . . . but thought it was funny since it made it look like it was bouncing . . . 5 new paintings done during my open studio session today. . . so as always . . .more to come . . . stay tuned!

Day 41 Bonus Feature

FUJI
DONATION TO ST. MATTHEW AUCTION
Fuji apples are hard . . .because they are not really red and not really green . . . this one was difficult to paint . . . and it was really hard to photograph the painting. . . hard for the camera to read pale cross complimentary colors I guess . . . most of you know I donated a lot of my work to various organizations . . . today's bonus feature is a 3 dimensional "valentine" I was asked to do . . . it will be auctioned off at the St. Matthews annual auction next Saturday. . . Enjoy!

Day 40 I Don't Like Green Peppers!

BEFORE
DURING
AFTER
set of three for $100 - Three 6"x6" oil on panel

So much for painting what you love. . . I don't like green peppers at all! . . . bought this one just to paint . . . did the half pepper first (and didn't like it) . . . but what's fun about this series is the whole pepper was stuck back together using toothpicks . . . then I painted it . . . still not happy . . . finally I painted the pepper all cut up . . . I didn't actually cut it up because I don't even like the smell . . . . I love all three paintings together . . . so here's a special offer . . . instead of $48 each . . . the set of three is $100. . . (shipping is $4 if you are not local) . . .

Now a little bit about the titles (skip this paragraph if "art talk" bores you and you don't want to be known as an art geek) . . .everyone is familiar with the "Before/After" photos especially the weight loss ones . . .but you never see the "During" . . . and really isn't the "During" the most important part . . . think about it! . . . bear with me my little art friends because this concept explains a lot about "painting" . . . Before: (first) you have an idea of what you are going to paint, a scene to recreate, a concept or emotion to express, you probably even have a vision of the After (the final painting) . . . and After you have a product, a painting, it's done, it's complete, it is what it is. . . Art is not the idea, Art is not the product . . . Art is the "During" . . .it is the process! . . . from the very first brushstroke to the final step back from the easel. . . this is the most important part . . .just like the weight loss program . . . this is where the real work is done, the choices are made, the give, the take, the failures and successes, the "challenges" and "joy" of painting lies within the "During". . . the sense of accomplishment, the learning, that all happens while you are "painting" . . . then comes the "After" . . .the actual painting the viewer sees . . . this is why no matter how much the viewer likes the product (and that is a wonderful thing) . . . they can never appreciate the process . . . just like the people in those weight loss photos . . . sure they "look" great and they get lots of compliments . . .and certainly they are happy with the results . . . .but what really matters is what happened During" . . . the successful painter (and weight loss person) are those that grasp the value of what happens between the Before & After . . .

Finally (non-art geeks can start reading again here!) . . . Thanks to Anita and Mary L. (out there in our viewing audience today) I found out something else interesting . . . those of you receiving my daily posts via e-mail . . . get just the "daily post" not all the stuff along the side . . . .like the "buy now" option, slide shows, e-mail subscription, etc. . . which is also where the information on "how to purchase each painting is . . . so I am redesigning this a bit . . . now each post will have (at the very end or maybe very beginning . . . let's see what it looks like) purchasing instructions . . .

Today's painting(s) are available - Set of 3 $100 - each painting is 6"x6"oil on panel -

Day 39 Suggestions Accepted

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST
Help me come up with a "better" title . . . while I was painting this . . . I got Rod Stewart's song (actually written by Cat Stevens I think) . . . The First Cut Is The Deepest . . . stuck in my head . . . so that's what I'm calling this . . .now you try and get that song out of your head and come up with something more appropriate . . .go back a few posts to get the idea . . . Enjoy!

Day 38 Inside Info

STICK WITH ME BABY!
STILL LIFE & PAINTING
Thought I would add the photo of my painting and my "still life" . . . it really shows how I use stuff for inspiration but I am usually not trying to recreate exactly what I have set up . . . I find it better to take things out of my painting, change them or move them around during the process rather than duplicate the still life exactly . . . too often we think we are suppose to recreate the scene . . . as an artist. . . I think it is your responsibility to show the scene as you "see"it, emphasis the interesting and intriguing aspects. . . change the elements, color, size and shapes to design a better composition, a more aesthetically pleasing product or a description of what the scene would look like if it was "made" out of your medium. . . whatever is necessary to tell the story you want to tell . . . I know so many artists who are struggling because they have a preconceived notion of what a "good" painting is suppose to be and are not putting any real effort into what "their" painting needs to be . . . this is not to say skill and technique doesn't matter . . .you do need the skills . . . just like you need to know how to spell and use punctuation and grammar when writing . . . but you still must supply the words . . . don't retell the story with paint . . . tell your story with paint! . . . and that's another week with the art geek!!!
Just think I could be watching the Super Bowl with 100 million other people this afternoon . . . you all have fun with that!

DAY 37 OPINIONS

I asked my daughter what she thought of my "Heart" paintings . . . I would like to think because I raised her to be a strong, independent , responsible woman . . . she had no problem voicing her opinion . . .which was "they're kinda cheesy" . . . so although this painting is for sale . . . it was done in honor of my daughter, Kayla! . . . and maybe that's a little "cheesy" too!WE GO TOGETHER LIKE CHEESE & CRACKERS

Day 36 What The Heck!

Hey something went terribly wrong . . . apparently my post from yesterday didn't publish???
Maybe it's this crazy painting of the eight ball that caused all the problems. . . since it has nothing to do with the images I am currently working on, nor do I even own a Magic 8 Ball or the smaller equivalent for a pool table . . . just something that popped into my head . . . the other three are from our Thursday open studio session . . . Enjoy! and now I will go do the post for today!
