My painting pal brought some photos over last week and after she left I was thinking about the composition of one of them that I liked really well . . . here is the painting I did from memory of her photo . . . really working hard at laying the colors down and maintaining theexpressive brush strokes . . . keeps the painting "alive" . . . if you go back in and "pet" all these areas of color too much . . . you lose all the "painterly" texture!

Day113 Hatching

BUTTERFLY DAY

Monday . . . painting along the shore of Lake McDonald . . . I turned around from my easel and notices a "ball of butterflies" on the gravel . . . apparently it was "hatching" day . . . and the warmer it got the more of them there were . . . "puddles of butterflies" in the parking area and all over my car especially on the tires and windshield wipers . . . also at the base of the cedar trees in the sunshine . . .once I decided to try to paint them they were flying all around me and landing on my hands, my paintbox and my brushes . . . it was amazing! Day 112 Spring Ahead

SPRING AHEAD!

Grabbed this little branch off the trail last Friday . . . it was the first bit of green starting to "bud" out . . . it's amazing the changes in just the last 4 or 5 days . . . this is our third day of 70+ degree weather . . . washed windows on the main floor today and did a bunch of "spring cleaning" upstairs . . . which includes dusting all of the art work . . . just for fun I counted the paintings in my master bedroom . . . over two dozen. . . nope not all mine! . . . put up a new book shelf in the loft studio too! . . . hope it's spring where you are . . . Day 108 Road Trip

ON THE ROAD TO HOT SPRINGS

Think I already mentioned I drove down to Hot Springs the other day . . . it rained (some of it was white) all the way there and back . . . so it was way too wet to paint . . . but as so as I got home I did two paintings "from memory" of the willows & cottonwood trees as seen from the road . . . will post the other one tomorrow . . . Day 104 From Glacier

RIGHT AT APGAR

ALONG MC DONALD CREEK

Here are a couple from Glacier the other day . . . I was set up right across the creek from the Apgar cabin . . . the bigger on that sits right on the bank . . . painted one looking up towards the lake and turned my tripod 180 degrees and painted the view back across the creek . . . these panels are a little more textured than I have been using . . . hard to photograph and hard on brushes . . . if these don't sell from the blog . . . they will be going to The Montana House in Apgar as they will be carrying my paintings this year . . . more on that later!
Drove down to Hot Springs today . . . dropped off paintings for a show . . . it rained (even some white rain) all day . . . so no painting . . . but picked out lots of spots I want to get back to when it's not so wet! . . .Enjoy!

Day 99 Cows In The Corner

The two paintings I did Monday on my way home from Polson . . . really like these . . . again very painterly . . . little blobs of black that are definitely "cows" when you step back . . . Also a photo of my new "painting corner" . . . even though I am spread out on all three floors of the house/studio . . . this is the corner on the main floor that I use to display my current work . . .and where all the "winter still life stuff" was piled up . . . until last week . . . a have a small "french-like" easel I use here and move all around this room . . . nice to have this spot all "cleaned up"!

Day 97 Short & Sweet

STUDIO VIEW (sort of)

Short & Sweet little posts this week as I am . . . busy . . . busy . . . busy . . . painting!

37 degrees at Lone Pine this morning . . . got two little ones and an 8x10 done . . . burrrrrr! . . . but had a great time! Also studying a lot . . . every time my husband walks in the door . . . he gets to hear another quote by Robert Heri from The Art Spirit! . . . if you have not read this book do so! . . . and if you think maybe you did once (in college) do so again!

Oh and enjoy the painting above . . . view from my Studio window when we got a skiff of snow the other day! . . . Skiff used to mean a very little bit but Skiff actually means "A flat bottom open boat of shallow draft, having a pointed bow and a square stern and propelled by oars, sail, or motor." Yet you would never say we got a skiff of snow when in fact it dumped several inches as that would actually be referred to as a "boat load" of snow!

Day 95 Working Towards 100

Will have over 100 posts by the end of the week . . . that equals (just guessing) close to 200 paintings this year . . .here are two paintings of my son, Seth . . . one plein air . . . one in the studio . . . can you tell which is which? Nice little paintings . . . but not for sale . . . okay cause they're not that great and besides who wants a painting of my boy . . . Enjoy!

Day 93 Still Waters Run Deep

DEEP WATER

Ugh! . . . Way ahead on paintings and way behind on photographing them . . . busy cleaning up studio & house . . . putting away "still life stuff" . . . so I can get focused on "plein aire" work . . . this is a studio piece done from a similar plein aire painting . . . just trying to recreate the deep water and keep the colors fresh . . . think it's got that going for it . . . Day 92 Ugh It's April!

REALLY TIRED - The "ally" is silent!

Oops! was planning on doing something new and special for the April Daily Paintings . . . some kind of theme or something . . . and boom here it is "APRIL" already . . . so you get this little painting a did the day before yesterday . . . "en plein aire" . . . at the old boat yard about a 1/4 mile down the trail from my studio. . . now this is an ugly painting close up . . . but very painterly . . . so pull it up on your screen and step back away from it . . . I promise it really comes together . . . still can't figure out the best way to photograph these little paintings . . . too close gives you a better idea of how they are done . . . too far away they loose all the great color & texture . . . Enjoy!

Oh by the way I do other things besides paint . . .and GIANTNESS is not an acceptable word in Scrabble . . . however GROK is . . . meaning to understand something so well it is absorbed into ones self!. . . . ah if only I was a GROK painter!
